Happy New Year! With the new year comes new ideas, goals and things we want to work on, right? In the past I have worked through the Powersheets from Cultivate What Matters, and from them I have come to establish my own little routine/rhythm that helps me walk through goals for the new year. One thing I love about the powersheets is the amount of time they help you walk through why you are setting certain goals and processing through what legacy you want to leave and who you want to be known as, and using that as a foundation for the goals you set.
I want to be a gentle, fun-loving, intentional, God-fearing, Jesus-following, Spirit-led wife, mom and friend.”
Let’s take a look at how I worked through my own goal setting this year.
-First, I love taking the time to process through what worked and didn’t work from the previous year then I start by writing out words, phrases, Bible verses or other ideas that I want to work on as a possible goal ideas.
-From there I will split things up into categories…this year I chose these as my categories: faith, marriage, kids, friends, health, social media!
-Then I start sifting through my original goal ideas list and narrow down the ones that I really want to place my focus on for the year.
-From there split them up into daily, weekly and monthly goals and sometimes I’ll write a little note in reminding me why and how this specific goal points back to the legacy I want to leave.
-I try to come up with a word that will keep me grounded for the year and this year my word is: humility (It’s my desire to continue to grow in submission and obedience towards Christ allowing me to wholly serve Him and others)

I’m not going to bore you with alllll the goals big and little that I have in place for this year, but here are a couple:
Faith: Establish a weekly Sabbath as a family (this is one Mike and I have been talking a lot about since I read the book “Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” last summer and it’s something we are both excited to pursue as a family this year – if you’re at all interested in more of what we are talking about – this article by John Mark Comer is great!)
Marriage: Establish a weekly time of extended prayer together and intentional time for sharing what we are learning in God’s word
Kids: Start teaching Emily and Ethan more about money (not sure if it’s going to be allowance based or what yet, but wanting to be more intentional about sharing with them the importance of understanding money and using it wisely to glorify God – this is coming off some good questions and conversations Emily has come to us with lately). We’re also planning on continuing with scheduled dates/intentional time with each kid each month – something we saw a huge benefit to last year!
Friends: Invest in friendships by intentionally pursuing, asking deeper questions and serving them. I’m also hoping to start some sort of book or Bible study in my neighborhood later this year after baby boy comes!
A couple other challenges I’m currently doing include:
-3 month contentment challenge (3 months of no spending other than necessities) – I’ve been doing this for several years now thanks to Nancy Ray!
-Keeping my phone off my nightstand by charging it in the bathroom overnight. (I’ve been doing this for about a month now and have enjoyed the tangible reminder that I don’t need to look at my phone right before I go to bed, and have replaced “scrolling time” with reading actual books)!
-3 month social media challenge that I started a couple weeks ago – to only look at Instagram and Facebook on my computer, keeping the apps off my phone and having specific designated time for it each day to prevent me from mindlessly scrolling.
Teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
